Washington, DC - DC Statehood PAC is proud to announce the first annual DC Statehood Day on May 1, 2023.

DC Statehood Day is a day of action and awareness, when Washington DC residents lift their voices in unison to tell the country about the importance of statehood for the District of Columbia.

We have chosen May 1 due to its abbreviation as 5.1, representing DC’s desire to become the 51st state.

“It is a profound democratic injustice that 700,000 tax paying American citizens living in Washington, DC are not represented with full voting rights as a state in the Congress, a body that can and has unjustly overruled DC’s democratically elected government,” said Lorie Masters, founder of DC Statehood PAC. “Simply put, statehood is democracy,” she concluded.

“Our country was founded on the ideal that government without the consent of the governed is illegitimate, yet that is precisely what we have here in DC,” continued DC Statehood PAC Board Member Bruce Spiva. “On 5.1, we call on all Washingtonians to raise awareness of the issue by telling the country why DC must become the 51st state.”

On 5.1, DC Statehood PAC calls all supporters to raise awareness of the issue by:

  • Discussing its importance with friends and relatives;

  • Wearing DC-themed clothes and apparel in public;

  • Signing the petition in support of DC Statehood, available at https://www.dcstatehoodpac.com/statehood-petition, which will be hand-delivered to the United States Congress on May 1.

  • Using #dcstatehoodday on all social media channels.
