The D.C. Statehood PAC, founded by D.C. residents to fight for the District’s admission as the 51st state, announces today that it is making its first donations to four candidates with a demonstrated commitment to D.C. statehood:  Senator Raphael Warnock (GA), Senate Candidate John Fetterman (PA), Congresswoman Elaine Luria (VA Dist. 2), and Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (VA Dist. 7).  All four have demonstrated their commitment to full democracy and full voting rights for the residents of the District of Columbia:

Senator Warnock is a co-sponsor of S. 51, a bill to admit D.C. to the Union as the state of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth. Sen. Warnock has said:  “The refusal to grant DC statehood is a part of the larger effort to disenfranchise Black and Brown communities.  It’s beyond time that folks in Washington, DC have equal representation in Congress.  I support DC statehood and urge others to as well.”  (Twitter, 6/25/20, 4:56 p.m.).

Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, has pledged his full support for D.C. statehood.  He has circulated a petition for statehood on his campaign website and stated:  “It is far past time to stop the racist policy of “taxation without representation” and give the people of D.C. the political representation they deserve by making Washington, D.C. the 51st state.”

Congresswomen Luria and Spanberger both have supported D.C. Statehood, voting in favor of H.R. 51 which has passed the House twice.  These were historic votes that put us in D.C. within reach of attaining our fundamental rights as American citizens that have been denied since 1801.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”  By making these donations today, the D.C. Statehood PAC takes the first historic steps to make real its mission of achieving D.C. Statehood.  We will support those in the states who will fight with us to achieve full democracy, and, especially in this tenuous time for democracy, we will go after those candidates who oppose D.C. Statehood.  This is only the beginning.  We urge our supporters to support these candidates, and others in tough U.S. Senate and House races who have a demonstrated commitment to D.C. Statehood.  We also urge you to go [here] to donate to the D.C. Statehood PAC so that we can together build a powerful force to achieve D.C. statehood.
